Khwisero is an area in Kakamega County in western Kenya, a rural constituency rather than a dense town. On a map it looks very different from a city: there is no grid of blocks, but a network of roads and tracks winding across gently rolling land, linking market centres, schools and farms.
Western Kenya is one of the most densely farmed parts of the country, and homesteads are spread evenly across the landscape rather than gathered in a single centre. From above, this appears as a fine web of paths and small roads, with streams running through valleys between them.
Much of the land is used for smallholder farming, with maize and other crops grown on family plots.
