Kineshma lies on the Volga in Ivanovo Oblast, and the river defines its map. The town extends along the right bank, where the land rises above the water, and the small Kineshemka River cuts through the centre in a valley on its way into the Volga. Old merchant streets, embankments and churches line the waterfront.
For centuries Kineshma was a trading and textile town, and mills and workers' districts still shape parts of its plan. The local drama theatre is named after the playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, who lived in the area. A long road bridge, opened in the early 2000s, now crosses the Volga, linking the town with the opposite bank.
