Kingsport sits in northeastern Tennessee on the South Fork of the Holston River, among the long parallel ridges of the Appalachian valley. Downtown was laid out to a deliberate plan, with a main axis leading to a church circle and rail yards and factories along the river. Beyond the core, suburbs follow the valleys and wind around the ridges.
Kingsport is often called the Model City because it was one of the early planned industrial towns in the United States, laid out in the 1910s with plans by the landscape architect John Nolen. It is also home to Eastman Chemical Company, whose large complex along the river is a major feature of the city's layout.
A Kingsport map poster brings the planned centre, the river and the surrounding hills into one frame. The formal geometry of downtown contrasts well with the curving roads of the later neighbourhoods and the river's bends.
