Kokrajhar lies on the northern plains of the Brahmaputra valley in western Assam, a short distance south of the Himalayan foothills along the Bhutan border. It is the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Region. From above, the town is a low-density spread of streets among trees, paddy fields and small watercourses.
The layout is relaxed and irregular. A few main roads carry traffic through the centre, and the railway line crosses the area on its way along the valley. Around them, lanes fan out into neighbourhoods broken up by ponds, groves and open fields. Streams draining south from the hills cut across the land.
