Kolín lies in Central Bohemia on the Elbe, known in Czech as the Labe, about sixty kilometres east of Prague. The historic town was founded in the thirteenth century with a regular plan centred on a large rectangular square, a layout still clear on the map today.
Above the square rises the Church of St. Bartholomew, whose Gothic choir is attributed to Peter Parler, architect of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. Kolín also has a well-preserved Jewish quarter and synagogue, and it gave its name to the 1757 battle in which Austrian forces defeated Prussia.
A Kolín map poster traces the planned old town, the river curving along its southern side and the railway lines that made the town an important junction. Industrial districts and newer housing extend outward along the tracks and the river.
