Kollam lies on a narrow strip of land between two kinds of water. To the west is the straight coast of the Arabian Sea. To the east and north is Ashtamudi Lake, a large backwater whose name refers to its eight arms. The lake reaches into the land in long fingers, so the city's streets have to work around inlets, islands and channels.
Under the name Quilon, it was one of the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast, trading with Chinese, Arab and later European ships. Today it is known for cashew processing, and the Thangassery area on the coast still has the remains of a Portuguese and Dutch past, along with its lighthouse.
A Kollam map poster shows how much of the city is shaped by water. Solid land lies in irregular strips between sea and lake, and roads and railway follow the drier ground. That gives the print a softer, more organic character than most cities of its size.
