Koryazhma lies in Arkhangelsk Oblast in the Russian north, on the bank of the Vychegda River. The town grew in the second half of the twentieth century around a large pulp and paper mill, and its map shows that origin clearly: planned residential districts, wide streets and a big industrial site near the river.
The river sets the town's main direction, curving past with its broad floodplain, while dense northern forest surrounds the built-up area on the other sides. Before the mill, the site was known for an old monastery, which still gives the riverside a link to a much older history.
