Kosrae is the easternmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia and consists of a single high volcanic island. From above it is roughly round. A steep, forested interior rises to central peaks, and a band of mangroves and reef follows most of the coast. Seen from the sea, the ridgeline is often compared to a sleeping woman lying on her back.
Settlement lies almost entirely on the narrow coastal plain. A road follows much of the shore and links the villages, while the mountainous centre stays blank on the map. On the eastern side, the small island of Lelu sits in a sheltered harbour and is joined to the main island by a causeway.
Lelu holds the ruins of a walled city built from stacked basalt, the seat of a powerful chiefdom centuries ago. A Kosrae map poster shows the island's simple arrangement: a green mountain core ringed by coast, reef and a single road.
