Kotagiri sits high in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, at around 1,800 metres, and its map is all contour. There is no grid here: roads curve along ridges and down into valleys, doubling back on hairpin bends, while the town centre is a small cluster of streets where several of these routes meet.
Around the town, the slopes are covered with tea estates, and the lanes between them wind in patient loops. Viewpoints on the hill edges look out over the plains below. Kotagiri is one of the older hill stations in the Nilgiris and is known for its mild climate.
