Kotu lies on the Atlantic coast of the Gambia, in the resort area west of Banjul, next to Kololi and Fajara. From above, the coastline is the defining feature. A long, straight beach runs along one side of the map, and Kotu Stream cuts inland through mangroves and wetland before reaching the sea.
The area behind the beach is organised around tourism, with hotel grounds, gardens and access roads close to the shore, and residential streets farther inland. The stream and its wetlands are well known among birdwatchers, and Kotu is one of the most popular places in the country for seeing coastal and wetland birds.
