Kouango lies in the Ouaka prefecture of the Central African Republic, on the northern bank of the Ubangi River. The river forms the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo here. On a map, the water dominates: a broad band sweeps across the frame, and the town's streets and compounds line up along the shore.
The settlement's form is simple and closely tied to the river, which has long served as a route for travel and trade in this part of central Africa.
