Kristinehamn sits where the Varnan river meets a long northern arm of Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake. On the map the water dominates. The bay reaches up towards the centre, the river runs through town in a narrow line, and the shoreline breaks into small points and inlets to the south.
The town was named after Queen Christina and grew as a harbour for iron from the Bergslagen mining district. Its centre keeps a fairly regular grid on both sides of the river, with bridges linking the two banks. A Kristinehamn map poster shows that grid meeting the organic edge of the lake.
Out on a point at the lake shore stands a large concrete sculpture based on a design by Pablo Picasso, one of the town's best-known sights. On the map it lies at the end of a slim headland, where streets give way to Vänern's open water.
