La Mesa is a town in Cundinamarca, Colombia, south-west of Bogotá, in the Tequendama province. Its name means the table, after its setting on a fairly flat shelf of land in the mountains that descend from the Andean plateau toward the Magdalena River valley. On a map, the town fits neatly onto this level ground.
The centre follows the Spanish colonial plan, a regular grid of blocks around a main square. Beyond the grid, roads wind down steep slopes and along ridges, following the contours rather than straight lines.
