Lake Manasarovar lies on the Tibetan Plateau at around 4,590 metres above sea level, in the far west of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Its outline is rounded and remarkably even, with few bays or islands, and the land around it is open, high and sparsely settled.
The lake is sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon, and it lies close to Mount Kailash, another major pilgrimage site. Pilgrims walk around its shore, and a few monasteries stand near the water. To the west a short channel links it to Rakshastal, a second lake with a much more irregular outline.
On a map this means large spaces with very little built detail, so the shoreline, tracks and nearby lake become the whole composition. A Lake Manasarovar map poster is therefore one of the most minimal in the collection, a nearly round shape surrounded by quiet ground.
