Langeland, literally the long land, lies in the South Funen Archipelago in Denmark. The name fits. From above it is a slim island around fifty kilometres long and only a few kilometres wide. It runs north to south between the Great Belt to the east and the island of Tåsinge to the west.
The landscape is gently rolling farmland, divided into fields and small woods and scattered with villages. Rudkøbing, the main town, sits on the west coast, where a bridge and causeway connect the island to Tåsinge and onward to Funen. On the east coast, Spodsbjerg has a ferry across the Great Belt to Lolland.
Tranekær, in the north of the island, is known for its castle and park, and the southern tip is set aside largely for nature. A Langeland map poster shows the island's lean silhouette and its quiet grid of country lanes.
