Lanshan lies in the north of Jiangsu, in the low, level country of the Huai River basin. From above, the land is almost perfectly flat, and this gives the map its character: long, straight roads, regular field boundaries and drainage channels that run in parallel lines across the plain around the town.
The town itself is a compact settlement where the main roads meet. Its streets form a rough grid, with denser older lanes at the centre and wider blocks toward the edges. Villages dot the surrounding countryside at regular intervals, linked by smaller roads through the fields.
