Leiria grew up at the foot of a steep rocky outcrop crowned by a castle, where the river Lis bends through central Portugal. From above, the old town is a small knot of irregular lanes pressed between the castle hill and the riverbank. The Lis crosses the city in gentle curves, lined for much of its length by riverside gardens and footbridges.
Beyond the historic centre, the city opens into a wider valley. Avenues and roundabouts lead out to residential districts, a stadium and ring roads that loop around the edges. The river Lena joins the Lis nearby, and farmland and pine woods fill the country between Leiria and the Atlantic coast to the west.
