Lemon Grove is a small city in eastern San Diego County, between San Diego and La Mesa. It covers only a few square miles. On a map its streets form a patchwork of short grids and curving residential lanes that change direction to follow the hills. Its boundaries are irregular and meet the neighbouring communities without a clear break.
Two lines give the map its structure. State Route 94 cuts across the city, and the San Diego Trolley runs through its centre, stopping beside the small downtown. Around them, cul-de-sacs and winding streets climb the slopes. The mix of straight and curved lines is typical of Southern California suburbs built on uneven ground.
The city takes its name from the citrus groves that once covered the area. A large lemon sculpture downtown carries the old slogan claiming the best climate on earth.
