This Licheng is a town in southern Jiangsu Province, in the country between the Yangtze Delta plains and the low hills along the border with Anhui and Zhejiang. From above, the landscape is full of water. There are canals, ponds and irregular fish pools, and the built-up area forms a denser cluster of blocks and wide new roads among them.
Several places in China share the name Licheng, and detailed English-language sources for this one are limited. The map therefore takes centre stage. It shows a typical southern Jiangsu settlement in which older streets, newer developments and a web of waterways meet within a small area.
