Valley-bound centre
The town packs its blocks into the available level ground, forming an elongated urban shape defined as much by hillsides as by its streets.

Liuzhi Map Poster & Print
Liuzhi lies in western Guizhou, within the prefecture-level city of Liupanshui, in a region of limestone karst. The land is broken by steep hills and hollows, and the town has grown wherever the valley floor gave it room. From above, the urban area appears as a band of streets squeezed between slopes, with roads winding in and out along the contours.
Liuzhi is administered as a special district, an unusual designation in China's system that reflects its development around coal mining and industry in the second half of the twentieth century. The map shows a working town: compact blocks, a rail corridor, and roads that make long detours around the hills rather than going over them.
A Liuzhi map poster shows how karst terrain shapes a place: streets curving along valley floors, roads looping into the hills, and open ground wherever the slopes are too steep to build. It is a less familiar kind of map, dense in some spots and bare in others, and rewarding for anyone who knows the region.

Winding mountain roads
Roads leave the centre in loops and switchbacks, following contours through the karst and drawing long, almost calligraphic lines across the map.
Industrial corridor
Rail lines and industrial sites occupy the flatter strips of land, a reminder of the mining economy around which the district originally grew.
