Lloret de Mar sits on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, where a wide sandy bay opens between rocky headlands. On a map the town fills a natural amphitheatre: the beach forms a gentle curve along the sea, the older streets gather just behind it, and newer development climbs up the valleys and hillsides inland, leaving the wooded ridges above mostly green.
It is one of the best-known resorts on the Catalan coast. The promenade runs along the main beach, and at one end a headland carries a small castle by the water, while the medieval Sant Joan castle ruins stand on the cliffs to the north. Further along the coast, the Santa Clotilde gardens sit above the sea.
