Löbtau is a district in western Dresden, a short distance from the historic centre. It developed mainly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when rows of multi-storey apartment buildings were built along regular streets. On a map, this era shows as a network of fairly rectangular blocks, many with courtyards inside.
The Weißeritz, a tributary of the Elbe, runs along the district and was redirected into a new channel in the nineteenth century. Its straight, managed course forms one of Löbtau's clearest boundaries. Main roads and tram lines cross the district toward the city centre, and small squares and green spaces break up the blocks.
