Long Mỹ lies in the heart of the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam, today part of Can Tho City's wider administrative area. The land here is completely flat, and the map is organised by water. Canals run in long, straight lines across the landscape, and the town grew where several of them meet.
Streets follow the canal banks, so the built-up area stretches along the waterways and doesn't form a compact circle. Houses and shops line the banks, and beyond them the land opens into rice paddies divided into narrow, regular plots.
