Madinah is one of the clearest radial cities anywhere. At its centre stands Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, surrounded by open plazas, and from there the city is organised in rings. Successive ring roads encircle the core, and major avenues cross them like spokes, giving the map a pattern that is easy to read even at a distance.
The natural setting shapes the edges. Madinah lies in an oasis basin bordered by volcanic lava fields, or harrat, whose rough surfaces leave large areas without streets. Mount Uhud rises to the north, a site of great importance in early Islamic history, and the Quba Mosque, traditionally regarded as the first mosque built in Islam, lies to the south.
