Mäntsälä lies in Uusimaa, between Helsinki and Lahti. It is a mostly rural municipality with a compact town centre. From above, the centre sits along the Mäntsälä river valley, with open fields on both sides and forest farther out. The main streets follow the valley, and residential areas branch off in short, quiet loops.
Since the direct railway between Kerava and Lahti opened in 2006, Mäntsälä has had a station on the line, which has made the town a commuter base for the capital region. The railway and the Lahti motorway run past in long straight lines, the most modern marks on an otherwise old agricultural landscape.
Mäntsälä also has a place in Finnish history: the Mäntsälä rebellion of 1932, a failed uprising by the Lapua Movement, began here. A Mäntsälä map poster shows the river valley, the rail line and the pattern of fields and woods that surrounds a small, orderly centre.
