Mafinga sits in the southern highlands of Tanzania, in the Mufindi area of Iringa. On a map it reads as a linear town. The main highway toward Zambia runs straight through it, and most of the streets branch off that spine before fading into farm plots and woodland.
The uplands here are high and cool, and forestry is a large part of local life. The large Sao Hill plantations nearby supply timber, and in many places the view from above is of blocks of planted trees crossed by straight forestry tracks.
