Maguan lies in eastern Gansu, on the Loess Plateau, a landscape of deep yellow soil carved by water into steep gullies, ridges and valleys. Towns here usually sit on the flatter ground of valley floors, and their shapes follow the terrain closely. Streets run along the valley, squeezed between rising slopes.
