Maharda lies northwest of Hama, on the Orontes River, at the edge of the fertile farmland that stretches toward the Ghab plain. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets. The river curves past it, and the surrounding land is divided into fields crossed by irrigation channels and roads.
The town is known in Syria for its long-established Christian community, mostly Greek Orthodox, and for the power station nearby. The Orontes gives the area its water, and agriculture has long shaped the landscape around the town, which is clearly visible on the map.
