Māhdāsht sits on the flat country southwest of Karaj, west of Tehran, where the land drops away from the Alborz mountains into a wide agricultural plain. On a map the town looks orderly: long, straight streets meet at right angles, and the blocks are fairly even in size, a sign of relatively recent growth rather than an old winding core.
The edges of the town are where the map becomes most interesting. Orchards, fields and irrigation lines surround the built-up area, and their straight boundaries continue the grid outward. Main roads connect Māhdāsht to Karaj and to the other towns of the plain, and development has spread along them.
