Mannārakkāt lies in Palakkad district, in northern Kerala, where the plains start to rise into the Western Ghats. It is best known as the gateway to Silent Valley National Park, one of the last large areas of tropical evergreen forest in the region. It is also the route up to the Attappadi hills.
From above, the town has no grid. Roads follow the ground, curving along slopes and valleys, and the Kunthipuzha river, which comes down from the Silent Valley, gives the landscape its main natural line. Houses spread along the roads in the loose, linear way common in Kerala, with plantations and green space between them.
