Mansoûra lies at the western edge of Tlemcen, on the plateau below the Tlemcen Mountains. On the map, modern streets and houses spread around a large enclosed area: the remains of the fortified city of Mansourah, whose walls can still be traced on the ground.
Mansourah was founded in the late 13th century by the Marinid sultans of Morocco as a camp during the long siege of Tlemcen. It grew into a walled city with its own mosque. The mosque's partly ruined minaret still stands and is the best-known monument in the area.
