Maputo sits on the western shore of Maputo Bay, near the Indian Ocean coast of southern Mozambique. From above, the city has a clear and regular structure. Long, straight avenues run across a raised plateau and meet at right angles, forming large blocks. Below the bluff, the older Baixa district lies beside the port and the estuary, where the streets are closer together and the grid is tighter.
Along the bay, the Avenida Marginal follows the coast northeast past beaches and headlands. Since 2018 the Maputo–Katembe Bridge has crossed the estuary to the south. It is one of the longest suspension bridges in Africa, and it shows on a Maputo map poster as one clean, bold line over the water. The port and rail yards give the western waterfront heavier, more angular shapes.
Maputo was called Lourenço Marques until 1976, the year after independence. Many of its avenues are named after political figures, such as Julius Nyerere, Karl Marx and Mao Tse Tung. The domed railway station in the Baixa is one of the city's best-known buildings. Today Maputo is Mozambique's capital and its largest city.
