Mehsi is a town in the East Champaran district of northern Bihar, in the fertile plain between the Burhi Gandak and other rivers of the region. On a map it appears as a compact cluster of lanes and markets beside a road and rail corridor, surrounded by fields, orchards and meandering watercourses.
The town has long been known for its button industry, where small workshops cut buttons from freshwater mussel shells collected from local rivers and lakes.
