Melmadai lies on the eastern side of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, in an area that has changed quickly as the city has expanded outward. From above it combines two patterns: irregular lanes from its earlier village form and newer, more regular residential layouts added as housing spread across former farmland.
Like much of the Madurai area, the surroundings include irrigation tanks and open ground, which show up on the map as broad blank shapes among the streets. Main roads leading out of the city give the district its structure, with smaller streets filling the spaces between them.
