Mezcales is part of the municipality of Bahía de Banderas in Nayarit, a short distance inland from the Pacific bay that also holds Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. The land is flat coastal plain between the ocean and the Sierra, and from above the town is a mixture of older streets and newer planned subdivisions.
Much of the recent growth comes from the tourism economy around the bay, which has drawn workers and residents to the towns just behind the resort coast. The resulting map is a patchwork of grids at slightly different angles, each marking a new stage of expansion, with fields still visible at the edges.
