Minatitlán lies in southern Veracruz on the Coatzacoalcos River, a short distance upstream from the Gulf of Mexico. The river curves wide past the city, and the map is defined by that broad bend, with streets on the higher ground along its bank and wetlands and lowland beyond.
The city is closely tied to the oil industry. The Lázaro Cárdenas refinery, one of Mexico's oldest, occupies a large area next to the river, and its tank farms and internal roads show as a distinct industrial pattern beside the residential grid. Much of the city grew up in the twentieth century around that work.
