Mohnyin lies in the southwest of Kachin State in northern Myanmar, in a wide valley ringed by forested hills. The town grew along the railway that runs north from Mandalay toward Myitkyina. On a map its streets form a modest grid close to the line, with rice fields and villages spreading across the valley floor.
It is the centre of a district that includes Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest natural lakes in Myanmar, which lies to the west. The surrounding hills and river valleys are home to several ethnic communities, and the town serves as a local hub for trade and transport.
