Moirāng is in Bishnupur district, Manipur, south of Imphal on the western side of the central valley. From above, the town is a compact grid of roads that quickly gives way to paddy fields and marshland as it reaches toward Loktak, the largest freshwater lake in northeast India.
Loktak is known for its phumdis, floating mats of vegetation and soil. The Keibul Lamjao National Park, home of the endangered sangai deer, sits on them nearby. Moirāng also has a place in modern history: in 1944 the Indian National Army raised its flag here, which is commemorated by the INA memorial in town.
A Moirāng map poster shows the meeting of settlement and water. Straight roads, a small town centre and field boundaries run out into the irregular edges of the lake, whose outline is different from any other lakeshore.
