Monte Plata is the capital of the province of the same name, northeast of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. On the map, the town forms a compact grid on rolling, well-watered ground. Rivers and streams wind through the surrounding countryside, and fields and patches of forest spread out in every direction.
The province has long been farming country, especially for sugarcane, and the land around the town reflects that. Roads link Monte Plata to the capital to the south and to smaller communities scattered across the green interior.
