Monze lies on the high plateau of Zambia's Southern Province, on the main road and railway between Lusaka and Livingstone. From above, the town is shaped by these routes: its streets gather along the road, the railway runs parallel, and residential areas spread out in a loose pattern into the surrounding farmland.
The area is home to Tonga communities and is known for farming, especially maize and cattle. Near the town are the remains of Fort Monze, an early colonial police post and a national monument, and the town is also the seat of a Catholic diocese.

The railway runs roughly parallel to the road. Together they create two long lines through the town, with the centre gathered between and beside them.
Plateau farmland
