Mranggen lies in Demak Regency in Central Java, just beyond the eastern outskirts of Semarang. On a map it reads as a corridor town: a main road carries traffic out of the city, and houses, shops and small lanes gather along it, thinning out toward the paddy fields on either side.
The town sits where the Semarang metropolitan area meets the farmland of the north Java plain. As you move away from the main road, the street network breaks into the fine, irregular grain of kampung neighbourhoods, then into scattered hamlets separated by fields and irrigation channels.
