Nallıhan lies in the western part of Ankara province, in a region of dry hills and valleys near the boundary with the Sakarya region. From above, the town fills a valley, with streets climbing the slopes on either side. The surrounding land is open and rugged, and the town's built area has a compact, clearly defined outline.
The area is known for its layered, multicoloured hills, whose bands of rock make the landscape instantly recognisable. Nearby, the Sarıyar Dam reservoir on the Sakarya River forms a wetland area known as the Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary, which attracts many bird species and birdwatchers.
