Nang Rong is a district town in Buriram province, in Thailand's northeast, on the broad, flat plain of the Khorat Plateau. The town centre is laid out along a main highway, with side streets and markets branching off it, and beyond them the land opens into rice paddies and small reservoirs.
The town is known as a base for visiting the Khmer temple sites of the region, especially Phanom Rung, built on the rim of an extinct volcano a short drive to the south, and the lowland temple of Muang Tam nearby. Both date from the time when this area was part of the Khmer world.
