Nanyamba is in Mtwara Region, in the far southeast of Tanzania, inland from the Indian Ocean coast and not far from the Ruvuma River border with Mozambique. The region is agricultural and is one of the country's main cashew-growing areas, and the land around the town is dotted with trees and farm plots.
From above, Nanyamba is a relatively open settlement. A few main roads pass through it and link it with Mtwara town and neighbouring districts.
