Nawāpāra, often called Gobra Nawapara, lies in the plains of central Chhattisgarh on the bank of the Mahanadi. On a map the river is the most striking thing: a broad, braided channel with sandbars, much wider than any street in town. The settlement spreads away from the bank in a loose web of lanes and roads.
Across the river sits Rajim, near the meeting point of the Mahanadi with its tributaries, a well-known pilgrimage place in the state.
