Nechí sits in the far north of Antioquia, close to where the Nechí River joins the Cauca. The land is low and flat, criss-crossed by channels, marshes and seasonal lakes that expand in the rainy season. The town occupies a small area of higher ground by the river, and from above its streets look like a compact island in a landscape made largely of water.
Like its neighbours in Bajo Cauca, the area has long been associated with gold mining in its rivers, as well as fishing and cattle raising on the floodplain. Rivers here serve as roads, and the town's position near a confluence has shaped its life since its founding.
