Newport Beach, in Orange County, has one of the most intricate coastlines in California. The Balboa Peninsula runs parallel to the shore for several miles and shelters Newport Harbor behind it. Inside the harbour sit several small islands, among them Balboa Island and Lido Isle. Each is covered in a fine grid of narrow streets and ringed by docks and seawalls.
North of the harbour, Upper Newport Bay opens into a broad estuary and nature reserve, where marsh and winding channels replace streets entirely.
