Ninh Hòa lies on the central coast of Vietnam, north of Nha Trang. On a map it covers a broad area: a town centre on the plain, irrigated rice fields and rivers running to the sea, and a coastline broken by lagoons and headlands. Wooded hills rise to the west, and the main north–south road and railway run between hills and coast.
The coast here includes the Hòn Hèo peninsula and quiet beaches such as Dốc Lết. Fishing and salt-making have long been part of local life. Recent development has added industrial and port areas along parts of the bay.
