Canal network
Main canals and smaller distributaries run in straight lines across the plain, bringing Niger River water to the fields and forming the dominant pattern of the map.

Niono Map Poster & Print
Niono lies in the Ségou region, in the heart of the Office du Niger, the large irrigation scheme that draws water from the Niger River to farm land that would otherwise be dry Sahel. From above, this is what defines the place. Long, straight canals and their branches divide the surrounding country into regular fields, and the town sits within that engineered landscape.
The town itself is compact, with a loose grid of streets, open squares and walled compounds. What makes the map unusual is the contrast between those low-density blocks and the precise ruled lines of the canals just beyond. Rice is the main crop of the irrigated zone, and the shape of the fields follows the water rather than any natural feature.
A Niono map poster shows how a settlement can be organised by irrigation. In black and white the canals read almost like a drafting exercise, with parallel lines and right angles stretching outward, while the town's streets sit slightly less orderly at the centre. It is a quiet image of human effort on a very flat land.

Irrigated fields
Around the town, the land is divided into regular plots for rice cultivation, a grid-like field system that stands out clearly in minimalist line work.
The town core
Niono's own streets form a modest, loosely gridded centre of compounds and open spaces, set within the wider agricultural geometry of the Office du Niger.
