Nishihara occupies a stretch of southern-central Okinawa Island, running from low hills in the west down to the eastern coastline on Nakagusuku Bay. From above, residential streets fill the slopes in winding, irregular patterns, and straighter roads and reclaimed land line the shore below.
The town's largest single feature is the main campus of the University of the Ryukyus, which lies partly within Nishihara. On the map it appears as a wide, open area of looping access roads, large building footprints and green space among the denser housing.
